Hola amig@s fintech,

Peru is about to open a national payment rail. Next month its central bank starts the pilot of TAPP (Transferencias Automáticas de Pagos Peruanos), which will let people pay from an account at any bank, caja or wallet through the app of their choice. The design comes from India’s UPI, and demand is already there: more than 50 entities want to connect.

Two precedents show what’s at stake. Brazil’s Pix, which turns six this month, is the upside: an IDB study in this week’s picks finds it expanded deposits and credit, most of all where digital infrastructure was weakest. India is the warning: two apps, PhonePe and Google Pay, handle about eight in ten UPI payments.

Peru starts with its own two, Yape and Plin, which already own the habit. The pilot opens with eight entities, and full rollout runs into mid-2027. It will take time, but rails like this get built once in a generation, and what runs on them shapes how a country pays for decades.

Enjoy the read.
